SEW HAPPY COLOR!!

outtakes from my #sewhappycolor PINK AND RED WEEK video! go check it out here!

ITS HERE!!! The fun month of exploring color is finally here! I dreamt this challenge up back in December as I was winding down my 7 weeks of #thehandmadehustle and thinking about what else I could contribute to the sewing community. I have a background in art, and also in teaching art, so I figured why not teach everyone about COLOR?

I often see people sewing and wearing neutrals because they’re easy and less “scary” to figure out how to wear. When we were all kids we weren’t scared of color or making mistakes with our outfits were we? NO! We didn’t think the only colors in our wardrobe should be tan, black, white and grey right?? Not to say they aren’t beautiful as well, but I see a great lack of color in adult clothing; both in stores and in the handmade community!

One of the main reasons I began sewing my clothes last year was to finally have the wardrobe of my dreams. Sure, there are high-end designers making bright colored clothes, but I couldn’t afford those. My favorite stores often had a few fun colors offered for a dress, pant, or shirt, but usually only a couple and then lots of neutrals. Those fun colors tended to only be offered in spring and summer as well. Why should I have to wait until spring/summer to find bright, colorful clothes? And what if I I wasn’t interested in my fall/winter clothes being only hunter green, red navy, black and tan??? Well, I don’t have to think twice about that anymore, because I can find fabric around the world to sew up whatever my heart desires. And it usually desires BRIGHT BOLD COLOR.

So here is the layout of the month. I would love for you to CHALLENGE yourself and your wardrobe by trying out some of these fun color schemes and experimenting with HAPPY COLOR!! It will be fun, I promise!!!

Each week there will be a different color theme. I divided it up this way just to have some structure to the exploration of color schemes and combinations. By the time we get to blue/violet week we will have already talked about how those two colors work with every other color already but… I think we can still find new things to try:)

I am also posting a new color scheme challenge every couple days of the week to help guide and stretch your use of that color. You will find loads of inspiration and videos of me teaching about these in my Instagram stories and posts.

The first two challenges are already live! Go check them out!

And did you think that was all there was to it? NOPE! There are also fun prizes for participating!! Each week I have a prize package to give out to those that tag their makes #sewhappycolor and @katiekortmanart , participating in that week’s color theme!
