B.A.N.A.N.A. PANTS!!

THESE PANTS ARE BANANAS......... B- A- N- A- N- A- S! Have you all seen the new Palisade Pants by Papercut Patterns? When their new Geo collection dropped I was immediately drawn to the fun pockets and casual cool styling of this pant.  I got the pattern and then went straight to Indy Bindy Co. because I envisioned them in some fun Japanese patterned fabric! This Banana stand print by Mannine is everything. I love the more subtle yellow bananas in the background and then...

The Hand-painted Dress

For years I've been wanting to translate my paintings into fabric. After I finished my BFA in Painting and Drawing at BYU, I filled out applications to all the coolest MFA textile design programs  in NYC (a place I'd always dreamed of living).  I had a blip in that application process that turned into me not actually submitting any of them, and instead going on to work as a display artist for an Anthropologie store outside Chicago. Life takes on different paths and I firmly believe that God...

The Jade/Isla Mashup

Made by Rae has been on my radar since my early years of sewing. I remember when I had my first daughter and sewed up a free shirt pattern (it wasn't a pattern, more like step-by-step instructions) from her site. Its been fun to watch how her blog turned into a business and gave her so many different opportunities!  For Round 5 of #thehandmadehustle on my Instagram account, I sewed up this combo of patterns from Mrs. Rae herself. I was excited bc I've been needing a dress like...

The Brunswick Pullover

Are you looking for a super comfortable pullover sweatshirt that also has fun details? Then I think you're looking for this pattern. Hey June Handmade constantly pumps out such great wardrobe staples! I love a good "pop" and also happened to have a bunch of navy striped fabric scraps in my stash. I lined my hood with a polyester knit striped fabric, and then used a woven (quilting cotton) for the side plackets, button covers (I used a dritz button kit) and...

The Wiksten Kimono Review

I don't know if you saw my dance on Instagram recently, but if you haven't you need to head on over and watch how the Wiksten Kimono jacket can MOVE! Ha!  I bought a fog machine you guys.  JUST FOR THIS DANCE. That is how nuts I really am;) I am head over heels in love with this jacket. I had been eyeing the pattern for awhile, especially after seeing this one.  One day I was at Joann's JUST for some twill (like you can ever leave with one thing) when I saw that fabric above and knew it was destined...

The Salida Skirt

Oh hello beautiful lines! Hello skirt that fits like a pair of jeans but looks like a million bucks.  I was so lucky to test the Salida Skirt by True Bias a couple months ago and I have been dying to share these photos!  (But if you want to really see this thing in action head to my instagram to watch my dance video!) I made three versions of this skirt and I want to share what I learned that might be of help to you, you sewing maven you. *Paired here with my hacked Grainline Studio Morris Blazer (I changed...

The Washi Dress

I have been wanting to make the Washi Dress Pattern ever since I had my old blog (so its been a LONG time), but for whatever reason didn't. I finally bought the pattern right before I had my 4th baby with the intention of doing a nursing hack like I'd seen Alina do.  But.... it never happened. Fast forward to last summer when I was visiting Jill on our epic cross-country trip. We loaded up our 4 kids (each) and drove to Texas to meet up and sew. Yes, we each drove around 22 hours one way just to hangout with...

The Fulton Sweater Blazer

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be one of the testers for this FABULOUS blazer! Its called the "Fulton Sweater Blazer" and its by Alina Design Co.  Its soft but structured, it looks sleek yet is as comfortable as a cardigan. The best parts? That collar and THOSE GIANT POCKETS! You know what I can stick in there? Everything. I can probably leave my diaper bag at home now because I can just throw it all in those pockets. I love that the back has a seam. It results in more structure and the ability to make...

The Kendrick Overalls

I would apologize for posting 10 photos of these cute overalls, but since I was able to narrow it down from over 300 (that my super duper awesome sister Caroline took), I'm feeling pretty good about it. I just want to do a quick post about these fabulous Kendrick Overalls. First, They make you look instantly stylish and cool, just because the silhouette is so cute. But aside from that they are also so comfortable! So comfortable I could dance (see here) in them, jump in them, and run all over Skellig Micheal  in them! You should've seen the other tourists...

HELLO!

Hello World! I am Katie Kortman. I crave visual stimulation and when I can't find it around me, I create my own. My goal is to help others do that too. I want you to see how much fun it can be to try something new, to make something in a surprising color or pattern, or to put paint to paper even if you're not sure what's going to come off that brush or if it will even look good. What's the point if we never take risks or try something new? It can be so invigorating to let go...
